RESEARCH PROJECT PROPOSAL

ABOUT THE PROJECT

This ‘About the Project’ section should: • set out the research question, aim and objectives of your research. • explain why this is an interesting or worthwhile research for your group to research. What is the background and rationale for choosing this topic ? What is the problem or problematic situation that your group is seeking to develop a better understanding of? Why is it worth exploring? eg. Who can benefit from your research ?
Research title: New Business Strategies of Chinese Restaurants during Pandemic Period Research question: What kinds of new business strategies are supposed to be executed by the restaurants to operate well during pandemic period?
Project aim: Our project is to explore new business strategies for Chinese restaurants during pandemic period. Objectives: 1) Study what kinds of measures the restaurants take can guarantee the customers’ health security during the pandemic period with the combination of public health and the costs. 2) Study what kinds of measures the restaurants take will bother the customers least be collecting the feedback from the customers. 3) Study how to achieve the recovery of the customer flow volume as previously. We will give some suggestions about promotions after the research.
Rationale for undertaking the project: (a brief background and management problem of your chosen SME or organization should be provided here) Our group members sometimes went to a Chinese restaurant call Tai’er Fish for dinner before the COVID-19 crisis. The restaurant has dining tables holding four people each at most and provides delicious fish cuisine. At that time, we could line up closely without much social distance and eat with friends without eating separately. Considering the epidemic prevention has been normalized in recent months, we realize that Chinese restaurants have been significantly influenced in operations and earnings. Tai’er Fish is no exception. We notice that the customer flow volume of it has decreased in recent years, and the health measures against epidemics seems to cost much costs and sometimes bother the customers. Therefore, our projects aims to come up with some new strategies for the restaurant we like and help create a balance between health measures and costs and recover the previous customer flow volume. We believe the results of the research are also helpful to other Chinese restaurants to recover the normal operations and considerable earnings.
ACADEMIC CONTEXT

Literature Review (Academic debate on theories, concepts and ideas relevant to the project): This section should: • identify existing literature (a minimum of 8 academic journal articles or the more is better) on this topic that relates to your research area and critically reviewing the literature (eg. compare, contrast theories, concepts and ideas from different authors, and critique their limitation or relevance in providing potential solution to your management problem). • cite relevant journals or books in in-text referencing style. A full list of reference should be provided at the end of your research proposal. What are the key academic theories, concepts or ideas relating to your research question? In-text referencing must be used to show the original source. What are their similarities, differences and limitation ? How relevant they are in providing the potential solution to your management problem ? How will your work contribute to existing knowledge? eg. filling a knowledge gap between academic theories and practice in a real business. The key academic theories relating to our research question are about how the restaurants react to the necessary health measures and decreasing flows of customers. The current academic debate on this topic all agrees that the pandemic has responsibility to suffer the costs of public health measures during pandemic period. Some provide many useful knowledge about the influence that policies under pandemic take. However, not many of them come up with new strategies proper for Chinese restaurants. Our group will obtain interview information and come up with the new strategies that are proper for Chinese situations.
Additional sources of secondary data: eg. Secondary data can be data directly relevant to your chosen SME or organization such as social media data, customer review, company website, company leaflet/poster/menu, information about your chosen SME shown in local newspaper or magazine, industry or market reports. The official website of Tai’er Fish: http://www.taierfish.cn/ The social media of Tai’er Fish: https://weibo.com/taier22?is_all=1
RESEARCH DESIGN

Methodology and methods chosen (and rationale): refer to the e-book: Saunders et al (2016)’s ‘Research Onion’ for more details. This section should: • identify the research philosophy, approach, methodological choice, strategy, data collection methods, sampling method, sample size that your group thinks will be used. [See Saunders et al (2016)’s ‘Research Onion’ for more details] • identify the type(s) of data (eg. qualitative, quantitative) that will be collected, and the source(s) of this data (eg. customer, staff, manager, owner, or others). • justify your choice on research approach, methodological choice, strategy, data collection methods, sampling method, sample size. eg. benefits and limitation to your research. • discuss any ethical considerations in your research and what measures have been considered to minimize the potential harm. What is the nature of the phenomenon that you are exploring? eg. your management problem or research question. How can you justify that your research approach, methodological choice, strategy, data collection methods, sampling method, sample size is valid in relation to your particular research question? What ethical issues and measures have you considered for your research ? The demand for the health measures is, to some extent, originated from customers’ concern about the potential virus and changing public health realization. Therefore, the research will be designed to focus on the interviews with customers. Additionally, to create new strategies to balance the health measures and costs, our group need to interview the staff and managers of Tai’er Fish restaurant to know more about its operation model. What’s more, our group will come up with some promotion strategies to help recover the customer flow volume for Tai’er Fish. The philosophical position of our project is positivism, meaning that the our project will be more scientific and result in testing phenomena. The project will hold the principle of epistemology and focus on the valid information required for our research and how our group can obtain it. The inductive approach will be chosen in the research, and our researchers will start with observations of information to create a new theory. Based on the data required for our study and the purpose of the research, the project will choose the the strategies of interviews, surveys, action research, et al. Our group will choose the primary data and quantitative data collected from customers, staff, managers, et al to find the object conditions and analyze them. Hundreds of samples are enough to analyze. The customers’ comments and suggestions on Tai’er Fish are significant so that Tai’er can adjust its health measures accordingly. As for the ethical consideration, during the data collection, we may interview people face to face closely, and it may cause some people’s concern about the social distance. We will respect everyone’s feelings and properly replace the face-to-face communications with remote video interviews. Besides, the kitchens of Tai’er may be forbidden to visit, so we will obey the rules of the restaurant.LIST OF REFERENCE (Does NOT count towards the assessment’s overall word count):
