Watch a video about “Wild Child”. I copied a link.
Answer each question on a separate sheet of paper, drawing your answers from reading, class discussions and hand-outs given during the course. Each question should take you about a page to answer, but there is no set minimum or maximum page length requirement. It is more important that the question be answered fully (i.e. worry about quality, not quantity). ALL of the questions (including the extra question) will be graded for:
Clarity
Thoroughness of the discussion
Demonstrated knowledge of the content material
Grammar / syntax / punctuation
Application of the theories to Genieâ€s case
There will be a reduction in grade for any papers handed in late
PART ONE: ALL STUDENTS answer the following question:
What would Vygotsky say about Genieâ€s development? What would he think was the greatest harm that was done to her and why? Describe Vygotskyâ€s theory in depth and apply it to Genieâ€s situation.
PART TWO: Choose ONE other question to answer:
Genieâ€s language development seemed to hit a point where it was not going to develop any further. To what do you attribute her hitting this “wallâ€? Do you think she may have been able to develop better language skills if she had had more time to do so? Why?
Discuss the nature vs. nurture interplay in Genieâ€s case. Be sure to explore the issue raised in the video of whether or not she was mentally retarded at birth.
PART THREE: ALL STUDENT answer the following question:
Imagine that you were hired to be Genieâ€s private teacher. You will be working with her one on one (not in a classroom). It is your job to move her academically as much as possible.
Where do you start and what do you do? Write out your plan to accomplish this. Your analysis should take into consideration:
Nature vs. Nurture
Piaget & Vygotsky
Language Acquisition Theory
Any one other idea
