To be completed individually. Assessments should be submitted via TurnIitIn on Blackboard INF20001 unit website, assistance can be obtained from the Swinburne Service Desk (03) 9214 5000. DO NOT email the assignment. Details (Scenario adapted from Fitzgerald & Dennis, 2012 p. 66) Elaine Pecks, president of Young Financial Whizzes (YFW) has come to you for advice on two networking issues. YFW is a small financial software company that enables young school children to become aware of financial issues such as saving and investing. It plans to run programs in schools around Victoria that teaches basic financial principles to students (between the ages of 12 and 15) who will be enrolled into mini courses to allow them to challenge themselves and others in these courses to save money and become good investors of their ‘money’. The company is planning to go ‘live’ n April 2014. Issue 1 The first issue is that YFW’s Information Systems (IS) department has come up with two options for producing a set of analytical tools to help students choose their stocks: Option 1: is to produce software that allows the schools to download to their own computers to run. The tool will carry out the processing on the schools’ computers and would occasionally need to communicate with YFW’s server to download current data. Option 2: involves running the analysis software on the YFW server with students at the schools using a web browser to interact with the server software. Issue 2 Currently YFW’s office is located in Melbourne. They have a Local Area Network (LAN) of about 6 computers. However, a number of their software developers and technicians would like to be able to use laptops at their desks and in meeting rooms with wireless access to the network. The IS department has proposed installing a wireless LAN (WLAN) to enable this. Since Elaine is aware that you are studying networking at university, she has asked you to prepare a report advising her on the two issues listed above. Elaine is not a technical expert so she requires the report be written in in a way that makes sense to her, yet enables her to have an informed discussion with her more technically inclined IS staff. Task Requirements 1. Identify and explain the application architecture required for the two options regarding the analytical tools. Provide diagrams to support your explanation. NB: Assume that the YFW server is a single tier for this task. 2. Suggest a third option and subsequent application architecture that involves one or more extra tiers. Provide a diagram to support your explanation. 3. Compare and contrast the three options in terms of their application architectures and explain which option you would recommend. Provide advantages and disadvantages of each application architecture in your explanation. State any assumptions you need to make here. 4. While wireless networking brings benefits around convenience and mobility, it can also introduce risks. Identify and explain any two security concerns associated with introducing wireless networking that Elaine should raise with the Information Systems (IS) department. 5. Identify and explain any two features or standards that wireless networking equipment purchased should support to ensure the best security possible. Explain how these features or standards would help reduce the security concerns you have identified. 6. Explain the importance of network standards to Elaine. Suggest one possible standard at each network layer of the Internet model that maybe relevant to Elaine’s needs. Explain each one briefly. Submission Requirements As part of the assignment a word-processed report is required to be submitted of approximately 2000 words (plus or minus 10%), which include: • Cover Sheet * with a signed declaration (use the ‘Individual Assignment Cover Sheet’ file available under assessments on Blackboard) Assignments without this cover sheet will not be marked • Executive Summary * (short summary of whole report – less than one page) • Table of Contents * • Introduction (usually includes background information, purpose, scope, definition of terms) • Body of the report should contain sections addressing the Task Requirements • Conclusions (summary and evaluation of report findings with key recommendations – or you may choose to state your Recommendations under a separate heading) • Reference List * You must use the Swinburne Harvard Referencing style throughout your report and include an accurate list of references at the end of the report. You can access the correct style from the library: Harvard System (http://www.swinburne.edu.au/lib/researchhelp/harvard_style.html) • Appendices * at the end of your report (optional) • Pages of the report should have appropriate headers and footers and should include printed page numbers • The report should be written in 12 point font size and should use 1-1½ line spacing format. NOTE: Please ensure that your submission (all parts of the report, including cover sheet and table of contents) is in a single file and has been virus-checked prior to submission. Late assignments may result in a lower grade for the assignment in terms of the University’s Extensions and Late Penalties policies. Any request for extension must be directed to the convenor, Sharmini Thurairasa, using the Application for Extension form available in the Assessment section on BlackBoard. You must include appropriate supporting documentation such as a doctor’s certificate or a letter from your employer. These forms must be scanned and emailed thru to the convenor within 3 days of the due date. Assignment Draft Please ensure you take advantage of having the online tutor look at a draft of your assignment. When doing so it is important to note the following: • The draft will represent an initial outline of what you propose to do in your assignment (if the draft resembles a final submission it will not be viewed). • The tutor will provide general feedback indicating if you are on the right track. More explicit feedback may be sought by asking specific and detailed questions but the tutor’s role is not to correct the draft submission. • Only one draft per assignment may be emailed to the online tutor for feedback (using your Groupwise student Email account). • The online tutor will notify students, via discussion thread posted on Blackboard, of the date for which a draft must be submitted by (usually no later than one week prior to the assessment due date in order to receive timely guidance and feedback).
