Purdue OWL MLA Citations Exercise
In this exercise you will create several different MLA in-text citations for a research paper.
An in-text citation appears in a research paper in parenthesis after information from a source is presented. It indicates (1) which source the information comes from and (2) where in that source the information appears (if it is a printed source):
…. One lion authority has written that when he worked for the National Zoo in Washington, DC, he regularly observed cats stalking children who passed by the lion cages (Seidensticker 120).
None of the items in this exercise credit the source in the text (that is, in a signal phrase), and all of them refer to print sources. This means that all of the citations need to (1) name the source in one way or another and (2) indicate a page number.
Use the Purdue Online Writing Lab to complete the items in this exercise. Begin by opening a Web browser, going to owl.purdue.edu, and clicking on the Purdue Online Writing Lab link on the right.
All of the issues below are address in the MLA In-Text Citations: The Basics page, which you can get to from the menu on the left by selecting Research and Citation > MLA Style > MLA Formatting and Style Guide > MLA In-Text Citations: The Basics. (Do not use the “Cite your source automatically in MLA” Citation Machine links that are at the top of many Purdue OWL pages.)
Note: The examples at the Purdue OWL Web site are models to follow; they do not provide the specific answers to the items below.
