Module 1: Evaluating Websites
The internet is a vast resource for information.  Which websites can you trust? How will you choose the most appropriate websites to use when writing a paper for this course? In this assignment you will get an opportunity to test  your ability to evaluate websites for authority, accuracy, currency, relevance and objectivity.

If you haven’t already done so, Go back through the tutorial on evaluating information.  There are a bunch of videos and practice quizzes (you will not be graded but they must be completed) which are necessary to complete before attempting this assignment.

Imagine you have been assigned to write a research paper about the use of the weedkiller RoundUp on food crops and it’s effect on people. Suppose you found the web page below. You can click on the picture to go to the webpage (Links to an external site.).
Or click the link below:

1. Evaluate the web page’s authority, accuracy, currency, relevance, and objectivity.  Would you use this webpage for your paper? Why or why not?
2. Now, on your own, find another website on this topic and evaluate it against the 5 criteria you have learned about. Provide the url and explain why you picked picked this website.
3. What evidence (numerical facts, statistical data) on this topic did you find in each webpage that you might use if you were going to write a research paper? Did the two sources contradict each other? What additional information would you want to find?  You can describe this in terms of questions you still have about this topic.
Summarize your answer to these questions in essay format using well developed paragraphs. When you are done, you will post your essay on this Discussion Board by cutting and pasting your information into the field below.  We will not be discussing this particular assignment but you can read the posts by your classmates to compare what you wrote to that of your peers.  You will only see their posts once you have posted your assignment.
